Fifteen years ago this week, a gay college student in Laramie Wyoming named Matthew Shepard was robbed, beaten, tied to a fence and left for dead. His attackers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson stole Matthew’s credit card, his shoes, and pistol-whipped him. At their trial, McKinney’s ex-girlfriend said the two men “pretended they were gay to get [Shepard] into the truck and rob him.”

Even experienced rangers were shocked at the horrific scene as the carcasses of 87 dead elephants were discovered in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. They had been poisoned and their tusks removed by poachers. And as hundreds of birds and other animals fed on the carcasses, soon they too would become victims of cyanide poisoning.

The United States is home to 442 billionaires like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. It conjures images of movie star mansions, Beverly Hills, and Manhattan’s 5th Avenue. But the truth is, 1 in 6 Americans are “food insecure,” which is how politicians describe people who don’t have enough food to survive.
 
In many states, including Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, hunger affects over 19% of the population.

Number of U.S. Military Aircraft at Shannon Raises Concerns

Shannonwatch have called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to clarify the significance of several U.S. troop carriers and other military aircraft at Shannon Airport in the run-up to what might well be a U.S. led attack on Syria. As U.S. President Barack Obama continues to look for support for an attack that would have serious repercussions for the Syrian people and the region as a whole, the organisation calls on the Irish government to make its opposition clear by immediately ending the U.S. military use of the airport.
