A vicious battle is being waged in Uganda for the human rights of gay men and women. But the players are not who you might expect.
Ugandan President Museveni signed a bill in February criminalizing homosexuality with penalties of up to life in prison. Though not a significant issue in the past, the attitude toward gay people in Uganda changed drastically in 2009 when legislation proposing the death penalty for homosexuality was introduced. Gay Ugandans already experience violence, death threats, and what is known as “correctional rape.” And though bigotry and hatred toward gays has been exhibited by thousands of Ugandans, some suggest it is in fact American Evengelicals who are leading the attack on gay people in Uganda.

As many as 27,000 North Korean prisoners have disappeared from Camp 22, one of North Korea’s notoriously brutal labor camps. According to the director of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, Camp 22, which is the size of London and at one time held 50,000 prisoners, recently moved several thousand prisoners to other camps. This leaves approximately 27,000 unaccounted for and feared dead from starvation. This information comes from former prisoners, former guards, and satellite photos.

Saturday, March 8th is International Women’s Day. But for most women and young girls in Malawi, it’s just another day. In Malawi half of the population struggle with poverty and hunger. Over 14% of Malawians are living with HIV/AIDS, and the average person will live to be only 53. And like so many other regions around the globe, women and girls are the most vulnerable. The most widespread threat to the girls of Malawi is child marriage, which is forced onto girls sometimes as young as 10 years old.
