In the world’s tiniest gesture of goodwill, Gap Inc. changed the background photo on their Twitter account to a South Asian male model. Several people were very moved by this apparent display of racial sensitivity. However other more socially aware consumers remembered that much of Gap’s clothing is made by children as young as 5 years old in South Asian sweatshops.

Reminiscent of the Dickens novella “A Christmas Carol,” Walmart made headlines last week as a global symbol of stunning corporate greed and shamefully low wages.  A Walmart store in Canton, Ohio set up canned food bins accompanied by a sign asking store employees to “Please Donate Food Items Here So Associates In Need Can Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner.” Public reaction was swift and negative.
