St. Michael’s House Facing crisis due to on-going Budget Cutbacks.

Funding for St. Michael’s House has been cut back by €11.2 million since 2008, the organisation now facing into a fifth year of cuts, is deeply concerned about its ability to maintain its services.

Patricia Doherty, the Chief Executive of the North East region, stated that the group were calling in families from all over the country to discuss the implications of further cuts in December’s budget. Over 150 worried parents attended a meeting in Ballymun this week to be told how further cutbacks may impact on their families. Many angry parents were preparing to launch a pre-budget campaign to defend the services at St. Michael’s House.

Commenting on proposals to cut Child Benefit, Joan Collins TD said:

“Joan Burton’s shameful proposal to means-test child benefit will push even more children into poverty. Having to prove you are on a low income will put many people off claiming the full amount. People on low incomes – or where literacy may be an issue – will be hit hardest. A means test will add to the 200,000 children already on the poverty line.

United Left Alliance announces major effort to plan protests and public resistance to property tax and unjust austerity

At a press conference today TDs for the United Left Alliance announced plans to launch a public campaign of resistance to property tax and austerity. The ULA will be supporting with the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes (CAHWT) in organising public meetings across the country focused on mobilising resistance and protests against the property charge and austerity prior to December’s budget.
