Question to Minister for Communications Energy & Natural Resources in relation to his mentioning nuclear power as a viable energy source in light of the fact that countries like Scotland have achieved great progress in renewable energy, linked to their decision to shut down nuclear power stations. Unfortunately the Minister chose to misrepresent what I was saying, when I sought for the state to take over the research projects that are presently underway that need investment to take the projects to the next step of viability. The Minister chose to talk about the billions it would cost to deliver these projects into yielding power & how that would not be possible without the private sector, completely missing the point that it was precisely because of the development costs, that it will only be the state which is capable of delivering and driving these projects. Linking up with partners such state owned companies from other jurisdictions could make the most of our unique wave power potential.

To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if he is satisfied to leave the development of the best wave energy resource in Europe to the private sector or if will he require the ESB to direct resources to developing the wave energy resource to provide renewable energy and jobs for Irish workers. – Clare Daly.
